Employers in the Tyne Valley area
24th November 2020The Tyne Valley area is a fascinating part of the North East of England and borders three counties (Northumberland, Tyne & Wear and Durham). There are many opportunities to look into for young people and it is well placed for numerous companies who benefit from the excellent transport links by road north and south and the proximity to the River Tyne. The Northern Railway company operates a service from Newcastle to Carlisle. It is an area of great diversity with business parks, industrial estates, urban and residential areas and also nature reserves and country parks. There are many businesses operating here and are well worth exploring further to see what future prospects they can offer you.

Countryside and Environment
The Tyne Valley area has beautiful landscapes, country parks, nature reserves and garden centres such as Northumberland National Park, Bradley Gardens, Wylam Nurseries, Tyne Valley Garden Centre and Tyne Riverside Country Park and there could be opportunities for work with the Land and Environment sectors as well as being lovely places to enjoy with family and friends. Manufacturing
Essity, Prudhoe, is a leading global health and hygiene company. They manufacture a wide range of household products such as nappies, personal care products, toilet rolls and medical device solutions. They have offices across the world in over 60 countries and offer opportunities for apprentices, interns and graduates in I.T., Manufacturing, Sales, Engineering, Finance and Marketing. Egger UK is a manufacturer of wood products for furniture and interior design based in Hexham. They employ 700 staff and are part of the Egger Group with 19 plants across the world. Fourstones Paper Mill, Hexham, has been a speciality paper maker since 1763 producing toilet rolls, hand towels, heavy duty wipes, facial tissues, absorbent pads and industrial wiper rolls. It is growing rapidly into new product areas. They are well established and invest in state-of-the-art technology to ensure they can be innovative and manufacture high quality products.
Horizon Products, the Altringham Works at Prudhoe, is an ‘own brand’ chemical manufacturer which supplies national and international brands. They manufacture various chemical formulations for example, adhesives, sealants, cleaning and descaling products, detergents and polishes.
Engineering
Osbit has trained hundreds of people to be engineers and offshore energy professionals at its plant in Riding Mill. They design and build cost effective engineered systems to support the offshore wind, oil and gas operations. They look for people passionate about engineering, have a strong understanding of design, are positive, can solve problems, are forward thinking, driven and enjoy a challenge.
Financial Services
Newburn based True Potential is an awarding winning financial group offering products and technological support to around 20% of the UK’s Financial Advisers and their clients. At the Newburn office they recruit staff for administration, customer service, compliance and marketing positions, looking for people who are ambitious, able to solve problems, are client focussed, work well in a team, understand their brand and communicate well.
Demolition and Waste Management
Thompsons of Prudhoe is a Demolition and Waste Management company with over 300 employees. They are a family owned business with over 70 years of experience and specialise in demolition, deconstruction, earth removal, site clearance and other services. They offer apprenticeships and invite people to send their CV in if they believe they have what it takes to join the company.
SITA, part of the multinational Suez Group, run the waste management and recycling centre located in Newburn. The Suez Group supports young people by offering internships, apprenticeships, graduate programmes, work experience and volunteering missions abroad. Opportunities exist in roles in technical, engineering, finance, sales, HR and sustainable development.
Health
The NHS is the largest employer in the UK and its national authorities, Health Education England and NHS Business Services Authority, are both situated at Newburn Riverside. Also found in the area are the region’s Ambulance Service and the North of England Commissioning Support Unit.
Health Education England has been extremely busy due to the global pandemic of Coronavirus. Their work covers more than 100 programmes from planning and commissioning to recruiting and developing healthcare staff in a range of healthcare and community settings. The NHS Business Services Authority has a budget of over £35 billion and provides a wide range of business and finance support functions for the NHS including managing the NHS Pension Scheme and NHS Student Bursaries in England.
Science
Based at Horsley Water Treatment Works and part of Northumbrian Water, Northumbrian Water Scientific Services (NWSS) employs over 100 Chemists and Microbiologists who carry out microbiological testing on the quality of drinking water. This includes tests for E. Coli and legionella. Over 450,000 samples are tested each year.
Housing
Karbon Homes, based at Newburn Riverside, provides social rented, affordable, specialised, shared ownership and market rented homes, and also develop shared ownership and market sale homes to meet their customers’ aspirations. They were ranked 11th in the 50 Best Places to Work 2019 in the north-east and last year recruited apprentices in the following areas; property services, housing management, customer relations, finance and communications.
Travel and Tourism
The Sill, the National Landscape Discovery Centre at Bardon Mill, is an exciting new visitor attraction to discover more about the great outdoors and heritage of the area and includes exhibitions and learning opportunities. They offer short term placements and volunteering opportunities.
Food and Drink
Northumberland is very proud of its Produced in Northumberland Scheme for food and drinks with some fantastic products being made in the area. There are opportunities to work in small businesses or start your own company if you have an entrepreneurial flair. County shows, country fayres and farmers markets showcase local produce, build customer bases and networks within our communities and the wider north-east region.
One such Northumberland company is Hexham-based Fentimans, manufacturer of botanically brewed beverages such as ginger beer, rose lemonade and curiosity cola. They have a great little video to watch to find out more telling you about the origins of the company and how they create their flavours and carbonise the liquids, how they go to China to look for ginger root and Bulgaria for rose oil. You could work in Flavour Production making sure the drinks taste just right!
Chances are you will have eaten something produced by Warburtons, but you may not know that they have a bakery in Newburn. This Lancashire based company is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of talent and this is shown on their careers website where you can read about past apprentices and play a game called ‘catch the toast’! Available roles include Bakery Operatives, Warehousing staff, Drivers, Engineers, Automative and Innovation staff.
